TMJ (temporomandibular joint dysfunction, also known as TMD or CMD) refers to a functional disorder of the masticatory system in which the jaw joints, masticatory muscles, and tooth contacts do not work together optimally. Typical complaints may include jaw joint pain, clicking while chewing, headaches, tension in the neck and shoulder area, ear noises, or limited mouth opening. In the professional literature, various functional factors are discussed that may be associated with TMJ dysfunction, including lower jaw position, teeth grinding (bruxism), stress, tongue resting posture, or body posture.
